Fishing Reports for May 2007

Took Max a client from Wyoming to Rock Creek today.  We fished most of morning and early afternoon.  The water was mostly calm in the am but winds increased to 30+ mph from SW around 10:30 am.  Mostly cloudy then cleared off with a lot of scattered clouds.  Temps were in the 50's to around 70 in afternoon.  Excellent day of fishing!  We caught more than 20 Largemouth in the 12 to 15 inch range using a Rebel Popper and 6" Lizards rigged with a weedless hook.  We fished the shoreline edges with much success.  We also caught numerous Bluegill, Rock Bass, Red Ear, and a couple trout using the Rebel popper and small jigs.  We caught one bluegill that was 8.5 inches long!  Not much fishing pressure at the lake today.  Only saw a couple others fishing.

Fished at Rock Creek.  Temps in high 80's with hardly a breeze from the the South.  Fished only about an hour.  Caught two bass at 13", 14", and 15" along with a 16" and a hog at 18.5 inches.  The largest bass was close to 5 pounds.  All were caught using a skitter pop along the edges of weed beds.

Fished at Rock Creek in the late afternoon and early evening.  Temp in the 80's with a south breeze 10-20 mph to calm conditions near sunset.   Beautiful day to fish.  Looked like there was a lot of pressure the day before on the free fishing day.   Found a hatch and the bluegill craters were cool to look at.  Caught several Bluegill, Red Ear, and Perch.  Also, caught a nice Rock Bass, a 19" Channel cat, and several nice sized Largemouth.  Caught 4 that were 13 inches, two 14 inchers, and 1 that was 15, 16, and 17 inches.  I used several lures but the best method was using a topwater rebel popper.  I caught a couple with a 6" green lizard as well.  The bass started really hitting when the wind calmed and the shade set in on the west side of the lake.  Water is a bit stained on parts of the lake but there is some very clear water on most of it.

Fished and Camped at Rock Creek this week.  Also helped up at the Trout Hatchery clipping adipose fins off of triploid trout.  We clipped more than 21,000 trout.  It was fun visiting with the area biologists.  I learned quite a bit from them and shared some ideas.  The fishing was a bit slow as the weather was very unstable.  Both nights produced storms and rain along with very cool air.  The bass were a bit more difficult to catch but did manage a few in the 12-17 inch range.  Used topwater baits and spinnerbaits.  Also, caught numerous trout, Rock Bass, Bluegill, and Red Ear.  Got one Rock Bass just short of a master angler at 10 inches.  The water was a bit stained from recent rains but still clear in some parts of the lake.  I used a 1/64 oz. jig with artificial meal worms with a lot of success for the panfish and trout.  Saw lots of neat stuff like Bluegill craters for spawning, a couple hatches, a snapping turtle, and a pesky beaver that scared the heebie jeebies out of me a couple times when he slapped his tail before diving.   It was a good week to relax.

Took to the family to Rock Creek for some paddling and fishing.  CJ caught numerous Bluegill and Perch before losing his "Spiderman" combo in the lake.  He just lost a handle on it and it floated to the bottom near shore.  Boy was he upset!  This was his favorite rod and he has been using it for around 2 years. He really enjoys fishing and this event was just devasting to him.  After several attempts to snag the pole in murky water we paddled back to shore to take another attempt on Sunday.  It was enjoyable day with calm water and nice weather.

Returned to Rock Creek in the afternoon and drove up to the area where CJ lost his Spiderman Combo and Gary a friend who works at the Hatchery came out with the pole.  He said that the local young gals had dove down into the water and fished it out.  CJ is very grateful to Morgan, Taylor, and Harley.  They are true outdoors gals.  Thanks Gary!  Well, the weather was cool today after the clouds moved in and a strong storm cell grew and produced some good rain.  I was on the lake fishing for Largemouth and landed a couple just before the rain fell.  They really took off during the rain.  There was no thunder or lightning so I stayed on the lake and drifted down the bank casting near the edge of weedbeds in the shallows.  Landed a few Largemouth in the 12 to 16 inch range.  They were hogs!  Huge girth!  Also, landed a 19 inch Channel cat on the same lure.  I used a blue spinner bait with much success.  Also, caught a few bluegill and red ear with one of the Red Ear measuring 8 inches.  The wind picked up again after the storm moved through.  There were some guys from CO fishing from the dock catching a lot of trout on worms.  Looked like they got their limit.  The lake has been pressured lately from the looks of things.  Just about every campsite was filled with campers for the weekend.  The bass are not as easy to catch these days.  The vegetation is getting thicker and near the surface as usual.

Fished with two clients in the evening.  We caught several panfish and a few Largemouth Bass in the 12+ range.  We used plastic worms, lizards, and spinnerbaits.  Also, used 1/64 ounce jigs for Red Ear, Bluegill, and Perch.
The weather was cool but nice.  We had rain and hail earlier today.  More rain expected tonight and in the morning.
